“Slava Ballarat” Exhibition Fundraiser

While the faces and stories of the Ukrainian people flood our televisions, radiowaves and social media, not all methods of donation and support are made equal. The brutal and indiscriminate nature of Russian aggression has forced many well-known international aid organisations to evacuate to safer regions or neighbouring countries – leaving the communities most devastated by the war which need the most support on their own.

Thankfully, local Ukrainian NGOs and Aid organisations have continued to operate in even the most dangerous regions of the conflict zone, with nowhere to evacuate to. Australian photojournalist Samuel Eder has chosen 3 Ukrainian and one European organisation who remain steadfast in supporting the people of eastern Ukraine in this time of unprecedented chaos.

Help make a difference by donating to the Slava Ballarat exhibition fundraiser or donating directly bellow.

Vostok SOS/EAST SOS (BOCTOK-SOS)

Vostok-SOS is a non-governmental organization that started as a volunteer civil initiative and a hotline in May 2014.

They were one of the first volunteer initiatives whose activists began to provide assistance to victims of the military aggression in the east of the country and in Crimea. Since the beginning of the armed conflict humanitarian aid constitutes one of the main directions of the work of the East SOS foundation. During the course of our humanitarian missions we also analyze and research current problems and needs of people, performing its media-covering and widening collaboration with the community.

We helped to find shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs), assisted in the evacuation of people from the conflict zone, collected and distributed humanitarian aid to IDPs in Kyiv as well as delivered humanitarian aid to front-line settlements, and provided psychological first aid. We also participated in the search, release and rehabilitation of victims of abductions, monitored and documented human rights violations and reported on the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Corporation of Monsters

We also provide humanitarian assistance to civilians, particularly those who are on the verge of survival today: single mothers, elderly lonely people, bedridden and disabled children. We supply them with food and baby food, diapers, medicines and hygiene items. However, we realize that more and more civilians are suffering due to the Russian military invasion while we are running out of the necessary goods in the country. We are no longer able to cope with this humanitarian crisis on our own and we are appealing to the whole world for help!

The main activities of the fund are:

- providing medical assistance;

- supporting hospitals (purchasing of new equipment and renovation of medical wards);

- supplying lonely elderly people of Odessa with food;

- assistance to graduates of orphanages;

- providing humanitarian aid to people in difficult circumstances.

The Halo Trust

For over thirty years, we’ve been saving lives and helping war-torn communities recover, by making their land safe.

When conflict ends, land is all too often littered with landmines and other dangerous explosives. Families live in fear and poverty. They can’t plant crops or graze cattle and day-to-day activities like getting to school and fetching water are fraught with risk. True peace doesn’t come until their land is safe.

After eight years of conflict, landmines and explosives continue to threaten the lives of families in eastern Ukraine. Since 2014, HALO has recorded nearly 2,000 casualties—men, women and children—suffering life-changing injuries or even death. Just last year, a family of four was killed when their car hit an anti-vehicle mine.

As the fighting moves back and forth, villages become battlegrounds on the frontline, leaving vast areas of agricultural and forest land littered with explosives once the battle moves on. As the conflict restricts access to the important industrial cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, it is vital that this land is made safe, so that villages like Kodema, where Lubov lives in eastern Ukraine, can begin to recover. In addition to making land safe, we deliver risk education, helping people, particularly children, understand how to stay safe.

With your support our Ukrainian staff can keep families safe from explosives and track where the bombs are falling for future clearance operations.
